What is it? |
Agate Fossil Beds National Monument protects an ancient oasis that has produced a wealth of ancient mammal fossils from the Miocene Era! |
What makes it beautiful? |
First and foremost, you’ll have to check out the daemonelix, or “devil’s corkscrew,” formations, not just because they’re really neat fossilized spirals, but also because they were made by ancient land beavers! The rest of the monument is a mix of rolling prairie hills, flecked in the spring with white, blooming yucca! The artist depictions of the creatures that once lived here—sharp-toothed pigs, giant-clawed horses, and tiny rhinocerouses—are very skillfully done and really help the imagination run wild! |
