What makes it historical? |
Arthur and Nina Zwebell moved to Los Angeles in 1921, neither with a formal education in architecture. Mr. Zwebell was an inventor, and Mrs. Zwebell was a musician! Together, they started building single-family homes and gradually expanded to include apartment complexes!
The Andalusia is considered the best example of Arthur and Nina Zwebell’s courtyard apartment complexes! The idea behind a courtyard apartment was to combine close living space with a beautiful communal area to interact with neighbors and create a community. Drawing from Spanish Mediterranean architectural style, the Zwebells incorporated tile roofs, gardens and fountains in their living spaces. The Andalusia, completed in 1926, has nine residences set around a green, gated courtyard and was once popular with Hollywood stars like Clara Bow, Cesar Romero, and Teresa Wright! |
