What makes it wonderful? |
Something very mysterious and controversial happened near here in July of 1947! According to witness accounts, something strange fell out of the sky, skidded along the ground, and broke a boulder in two! The military claimed it was a weather balloon, but eyewitnesses later described the bodies and the materials as being otherworldly!
Though it’s never been proven that aliens crash-landed here six decades ago, the idea has added a sense of wonder to this part of New Mexico, especially to the nearby city of Roswell. The alien crash story has inspired an entire subculture of believers and the books, movies, and TV shows they’ve produced!
And whether or not the crash was caused by aliens or the top-secret military surveillance program called Project Mogul, there is a real sense of eeriness standing here in the vast, windswept ranchlands of central New Mexico, wondering if maybe, just maybe, someone is looking down from above! |
Where is this place? |
There isn’t really an address to this place, but I do have GPS coordinates: 33.950801, -105.313303.
From Capitan, you’ll go to where NM-246 turns into County Road B-007. The GPS will take you to a gate where you will probably want to walk the final mile to the monument.
From Albuquerque: ~136mi (219km) — 2.3hrs From Las Cruces: ~187mi (301km) — 3.2hrs From Roswell: ~84mi (136km) — 1.4hrs From Santa Fe: ~144mi (232km) — 2.4hrs |
