What is it? |
Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument preserves the largest and most diverse collection of Pleistocene fossils in the combined Mojave Desert and southern Great Basin! |
What makes it beautiful? |
This is still a park in the making. The most visible parts are the old excavation sites, which are not much to look at from above. However, it’s what’s below the surface that counts! 10,000 Pleistocene fossils have been extracted from the ground here, and in their wake, neat channels and cliffs have formed a mini labyrinth in the Nevada desert. On the ground, there are all kinds of strange branch-like sandstone formations that make one wonder just what formed them! It’s well worth a snoop and a scramble, though this park will be much neater when it has an interpretive center to show off some of its fossils! |
