What makes it historical? |
When this lighthouse was originally built in 1826, it was actually a cream-colored pyramid that just wasn’t tall enough to really be effective! It got taken down shortly after it was constructed and sat in ruin for 31 years until it got enough funding to be rebuilt, growing from 74 to 168 feet in height! It aided navigation—one of the first signs of American land for incoming immigrants—until December 31, 1973!
It may not look it from the outside, but this lighthouse is supposedly haunted by one of its former caretakers! During the reconstruction of the first lighthouse, the caretaker and his family stayed in a poorly insulated shack during a terribly cold winter, and his daughter died from the elements. The poor caretaker hanged himself in grief, and some say his ghost still opens and closes doors around the light station! |
