What is it? |
Creek Street was once the red light district of Ketchikan! |
What makes it historical? |
In 1903, the city of Ketchikan banned houses of ill repute from the city center and sent them to “Indian Town” on the outskirts across Ketchikan Creek. Being at the mouth of the creek, it was said that this was where the men and the salmon came to spawn! This historic red light district built itself up on stilts along the steep river bank, and if the police came a-knocking, patrons could escape up the even steeper Married Man’s Trail nearby! Creek Street continued business as usual until 1954 when the mischief mansions were banned completely! |
How can I Help the Helpers? |
HERE’S HOW:
- Buy something nifty from one of the shops!
- Become a member of the Tongass Historical Society!
- Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
