What is it? |
Waco Mammoth National Monument preserves a 65,000 to 75,000 year old nursery herd of Columbian Mammoths! |
What makes it beautiful? |
This is a tiny monument, but it is rich with stories! Here, a herd of mammoths tried in vain to protect their baby from rising floodwaters! They had lived along with camels, who exchanged their eyesight services for the size protection of the mammoths, but alas, neither animal partner was able to save the other when the floods came.
A few layers of rock in the future, a giant bull mammoth named Quincy is trapped in time right next to the bones of a baby. A huge footprint has crushed his skull! No one knows for sure how this scenari happened, but the possibilities stir the imagination! |
