What is it? |
Automobile Alley is a major commercial district in Oklahoma City dating back to the heyday of Route 66! |
What makes it historical? |
This stretch of Broadway Avenue was built into the original layout of Oklahoma City, just wide enough for a wagon to turn around! It was originally lined with houses, but during the 1910s and 1920s, those houses gave way to brick dealerships and service facilities for cars! By the end of the 1920s, 52 of Oklahoma’s first car dealerships were located along this stretch of Broadway! Much of the architecture was somehow classical or plant-based in design (like the Magnolia Building), but as automation took hold, brick veneers and car-themed designs crept in, including the neon signs that still bring this street to life at night! |
How can I Help the Helpers? |
HERE’S HOW:
- Become a sponsor of Downtown OKC!
- Become a member of the Oklahoma Historical Society!
- Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
