What is it? |
The Milk Bottle Grocery is a tiny, triangular building with a huge milk bottle on top! |
What makes it historical? |
This teeny, tiny grocery store was built in 1930 on a tiny island between streets where a Belle Isle streetcar stop used to be. The giant milk bottle on top showed up in 1948, originally to promote the dairy industry, and since then, it’s featured a whole bunch of milk-related advertisements, never directly related to the grocery store below! At a prime spot along the original Route 66, this shop has changed hands and brands many times over the years, but its giant, mimetic milk bottle, a relic of a time before cartons and jugs, is still on display for curious drivers and history buffs! |
