What is it? |
The Amarillo Building is a multi-use apartment and office complex in downtown Amarillo! |
What makes it historical? |
With the oil, cattle, and natural gas businesses booming in the Texas Panhandle, the need for office space in Amarillo was pretty apparent! Since there’s no reason to build anything small in Texas, the firm of Shepard & Wiser devised an 8-story, 140-office building in 1925! After just under a year and $500,000 invested (about $7 million today), they had created Amarillo’s first skyscraper! Once it was built, many more of Amarillo’s downtown buildings followed suit in the skyscraper format! |
How can I Help the Helpers? |
HERE’S HOW:
- Become a member of Center City!
- Donate to Texas Historical Foundation!
- Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
