What Is Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument?
Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument protects the 13,000 year old digsites where generations of Native Americans harvested colorful flint!
What Makes It Beautiful?
The beauty of this monument is in the micro, more than the macro! The flint, or chert, is banded with a rainbow of colors and crystals, created by a combination of silica, manganese, and iron! Each stone has unique patterns and textures, and range in size from tiny pebbles to huge boulders! It’s well worth taking a seat to admire the neat colors and the thousands of spear and arrow tips that came from these quarries!
