What is it? |
Texada is the oldest brick building and Natchez and the former capitol of Mississippi! |
What makes it historical? |
Texada was built between 1793 and 1805, when Spain controlled Mississippi, and named for Miguel Garcia de Texada, the mayordomo of the Natchez Royal Hospital, who acquired the property in 1798 for $1,000! Though Señor Texada died shortly before Mississippi became the 20th state of the Union, his building passed into the hands of Edward Turner, who made it the meeting house of the infant state’s legislature! Today, it is the oldest surviving state capitol building in the USA! |
