What is it? |
The historic center of Clinton, Mississippi! |
What makes it historical? |
Clinton was founded in 1805 under the name Mount Salus and became renowned for its healing springs! It developed into a prosperous cotton-production center that put in a bid to become Mississippi’s capital, changing its name to Clinton in the process. In the 1830s, it was the third largest city in Mississippi, exporting 20,000 bales of cotton per year, mostly on the Clinton-Vicksburg Railroad! Today, Clinton boasts the largest private university in the state: Mississippi College! |
