What is it? |
One of four Franciscan monasteries built in Rome by order of Bonaventura Gran! |
What makes it historical? |
Miquel Baptista Gran Peris was born in Riudoms in Catalonia and entered the Franciscan order at the age of 20, changing his name to Bonaventura! He was charged with creating four monasteries in Rome where Franciscan monks could meditate and practice in silence and seclusion. One of them was this monastery on Palatine Hill constructed in 1675!
While this Bonaventura played a role in its construction, along with Cardinal Franceso Barberini, the church itself is named for another Franciscan, San Bonaventura da Bagnoregio! It was sometimes called “alla Polveriera” because there was a gunpowder factory nearby in the early 19th century! |
How can I Help the Helpers? |
HERE’S HOW:

- Become a member of the World Monuments Fund!
- Donate to the World Monuments Fund!
- Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
