What is it? |
The Pisa Cathedral, or Duomo di Pisa, is a massive cathedral complex dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary! |
What makes it historical? |
This cathedral was originally founded in 1064 AD and consecrated on September 26th, 1118. Two single-named architects contributed to its design: Buscheto with the layout and interior, and Rainaldo with the façade! The style blends Roman and Islamic styles and even reused the stone from a bunch of Roman monuments! Its baptistry, designed by Diotisalvi and constructed between 1152 and 1180, is the biggest in all of Italy! Its pulpit, sculpted in 1260 by Nicola Pisano, who also worked on the pulpit for the Duomo di Siena, became a model for other sculptures and in fact, launched a whole sculptural Renaissance! |
How can I Help the Helpers? |
HERE’S HOW:
- Pay the entrance fee to help maintain trails, signs, structures, and other visitor services!
- Donate to the Opera della Primaziale Pisana!
- Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
