What is it? |
The Ponte Vecchio is the oldest and most famous bridge in Florence! |
What makes it historical? |
The first record of this bridge across the Arno dates back to 966 AD and for over a century was the only place to cross the river! Originally built for defense, it was rebuilt in 1345, possibly by Dominian friars, and repurposed for commercial use. Originally, butchers, fishmongers, and other smell tradesfolk ran the shops on the bridge, but in 1593, Ferdinand I kicked them out and declared that only goldsmiths and jewelers could have shops on the Old Bridge for the well being of citizens. As the only bridge not destroyed during World War II, the Ponte Vecchio has kept the goldsmithing tradition alive and still practices it today! |
