Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús!

Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús
What is it? This church, or iglesia, is Argentina’s oldest and is part of the UNESCO-protected Jesuit Block!
What makes it historical? After arriving in this distant outpost of the Spanish empire in 1599, Jesuit missionaries took what they could and built a small shrine for their services. It stood for about forty years until Manuel de Cabrera—grandson of Córdoba’s founder, Jerónimo Luis de Cabrera—donated the funds for a Belgian shipbuilder named Felipe Lemaire to construct a grand new church! It took roughly 24 years to build from 1644 until 1668 because the wood had to be sourced all the way from Paraguay! It was consecrated in 1671, making it the oldest continuously serving church in all of Argentina!
How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Volunteer with World Heritage Volunteers!
  • Donate to UNESCO!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
