What is it? |
The Union Terminal Group is a multi-use group of buildings that’s both a shopping center and a hub for Cleveland’s rail transportation! |
What makes it historical? |
This project of creating a railway hub in Cleveland started in 1922 with the second largest excavation after the Panama Canal! Over 2,200 buildings were demolished to make room for tracks and real estate! Designed by Oris and Mantis Van Sweringen, who were also designing the community of Shaker Heights, the complex grew to include the 52-story Tower Building (second tallest in North America until 1964), the Medical Arts Building, Builders Exchange Building, and Midland Building. Once the above-ground structures were complete, the Union Terminal opened its doors in 1930 and serviced both interurban and intercity rail lines like the Baltimore and Ohio, New York Central, and Nickel Plate Road! |
How can I Help the Helpers? |
HERE’S HOW:
- Donate to the Cleveland State University Center for Public History!
- Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
