Petroglyph National Monument!

Petroglyph National Monument

What Is Petroglyph National Monument?

Petroglyph National Monument preserves one of America’s densest collections of rock art dating back 300 to 3000 years!

What Makes It Beautiful?

The black rocks of this basaltic landscape were perfect for Ancestral Puebloan people to etch messages and illustrations with excellent contrast! Throughout this monument, you can walk right up to most of them and gaze at their amazing detail up close. Based on their rock position, they illuminate and fade with the path of the sun! There are gorgeous likenesses of Mexican macaws and mysterious beings with intricate outfits and headgear! They are all backed by the towering Sandia Mountains and, if you time it right, a colorful hot air balloon or a hundred!
