What is it? |
The CCC Historic District in Bandelier National Monument is full of Depression-era buildings constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps! |
What makes it historical? |
During the Great Depression, FDR’s New Deal launched infrastructure projects across the country, and here at Bandelier National Monument, several thousand men went to work building the roads, trails, and park structures that are still around today! The buildings here represent the National Park Service Rustic style, or Parkitecture, which is meant to blend with the natural surroundings. For this reason, the buildings of Bandelier National Monument have the appearance of an old pueblo! The buildings housed the construction workers, park staff, and, in 1943, scientists and technicians involved with the Manhattan Project! |
How can I Help the Helpers? |
HERE’S HOW:
- Pay the entrance fee to help maintain trails, signs, structures, and other visitor services!
- Volunteer at Bandelier National Monument!
- Donate to Bandelier National Monument!
- Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
