What makes it historical? |
The product of William H. & Allie Neff and Anna Scott, this hotel first opened its doors in 1895 as the Grand Hotel and Restaurant. After Harry Earl Burnett, Sr. purchased it in 1904 and added a west wing, he held a naming contest to liven things up. The $25 winner was St. Regis!
This hotel wasn’t just a place to sleep but, with a huge bar and ballroom, it was also an important social hub for the area! Such notables as boxing champion, Jack Dempsey, stayed here, and it was a popular stop for train passengers. After Prohibition ended, Grand Junction’s first cocktail bar opened here, and William Moyer, donor of Grand Junction’s first public swimming pool, lived out the last of his days here! |
