What makes it historical? |
Part of the Corazón de Trinidad National Historic District, the Trinidad Post Office dates back to 1910! While this historic center is filled with architectural styles spanning over a century, the post office is the only Beaux-Arts building and the best preserved Beaux-Arts post office in all of Colorado! That’s all thanks to James Knox Taylor, supervising architect, who was a big fan of classical styles of architecture!
Another fun fact about this James Taylor is that he was also “supervising architect” for the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital, Denver Mint, Philadelphia Mint, and at least 23 other post offices nationwide! He was the only Supervisory Architect during the twenty years of the Tarsney Act of 1893. This act gave him the power to hold competitions for private architects to submit for major structures. After he gave the New York Customs House commission to his former partner, Cass Gilbert, though, the act got repealed in 1913! |
