Timberline Lodge!

Timberline Lodge

What Is the Timberline Lodge?

The Timberline Lodge is America’s only ski resort open 12 months of the year!

What Makes It Historical?

As downhill skiing became a hugely popular winter sport, and skiiers descended upon Mount Hood in record numbers, the Federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) set to work creating a lodge where these snow lovers could stay!

W.I. Turner served as supervising architext, and the consulting architect was Gilbert Stanley Underwood, who was also the architectural advisor to the US Treasury! Marjorie Hoffman Smith was in charge of interior design and combined Native and pioneer motifs with local Oregon wildlife and plants for a uniquely “Cascadian” chalet-style feel to this mountain resort!

This huge collaboration of Oregon craftsfolk and artisans was officially dedicated on September 28, 1937 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and has served as an active ski resort ever since. If it looks familiar, you may have seen the Lodge featured in the movie, The Shining! Don’t worry, I’m pretty sure the real hotel isn’t hunted. Pretty sure!

How Can I #HelpTheHelpers?

  • Stay a night at the Timberline Lodge!
  • Become a member of the Clackamas County Historical Society!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
