New River Gorge National Park and Preserve

What Is New River Gorge National Park and Preserve?

This national park preserves 70,000 acres of wilderness along the New River one of North America’s oldest, plus the historical sites that line it!

What Makes It Beautiful?

The New River Gorge is the longest and deepest gorge in the whole Appalachian system! Whether you like to stand on top and take in the expansive views or get right into the thick of its Class III-IV whitewater rapids, this park is jam-packed with adventure! But there are plenty of peaceful spots here too, lazy pools to float in or just to watch from the banks. For an extra spectacular show of how humans interact with this ancient piece of nature, come to Bridge Day, when the famous New River Gorge Bridge gets closed to cars and opened to pedestrians and vendors. Plus, witness the daring feats of rappellers and BASE jumpers as they perform spectacular daredevil stunts off the side of the 3,030-foot bridge!
