What Is the Lincoln Home National Historic Site?
This two-story house in Springfield, Illinois is the only home that Abraham Lincoln ever owned!
What Makes It Historical?
The Lincoln family lived in this home from 1844 until 1861, except for a two-year break when Abe was in Congress. He’d bought it for $1,500 from Reverend Charles Dresser, who happened to be the same reverend who married Abe and Mary Todd! It was super convenient, within walking distance of his law office, and it was ready to grow from the original small cottage to the two-story, 12-room building we see today! Three Lincoln sons were born here, and Eddie, sadly, died here. In this house, Mr. Lincoln received his nomination to be Republican presidential candidate, and on February 6, 1861, the Lincoln family departed this house, never to return!
