What Is Gateway Arch National Park?
This unusual national park protects the monumental Gateway Arch and nearby Old St. Louis Courthouse!
What Makes It Beautiful?
Mostly a city park around the colossal Gateway Arch, this park’s beauty can be centered on the Arch itself, designed in 1947 by Finnish architect, Eero Saarinen! A catenary arch, it was designed to frame the environment as the U.S. expanded westward in the years following the Louisiana Purchase. At 630 feet in height, it’s the tallest American monument, and it creates iconic landscapes, whether looking west through it to the former frontier or looking back east as it frames its home city! And of course, with a height like that, it offers the most spectacular views to anyone who wants to take the tram up its curved edges to the top!
