Plaque Text for this Pennsylvania Landmark:
Co-founder of Pittsburgh’s Black Horizon Theater and the author of a cycle of ten plays that have been hailed as a unique triumph in American literature. The plays cover each decade of the 20th century and most focus on African American life in the Hill District. Two of the plays, Fences and The Piano Lesson, won Pulitzer prizes for best drama in 1987 and 1990; Fences also won Broadway’s Tony Award. This site is Wilson’s birthplace.
More about the August Wilson Home:
If you can believe it, Mr. Wilson spent his first thirteen years crammed into two (later four) rooms with his mom and five siblings! He grew up in a rich community of shops, baseball, and jazz, which would later inspire his American Century Cycle, a collection of ten plays, each representing a decade of African-American experience in the 20th Century! That series started with Gem of the Ocean representing the 1900s, crescendoed with Fences in the 1950s, and concluded with Radio Golf in the 1990s!
