Carrie Blast Furnaces!

Carrie Blast Furnaces

What Are the Carrie Blast Furnaces?

Carrie Blast Furnaces #6 and #7 are the last two furnaces still standing from a massive U.S. Steel plant!

What Makes Them Historical?

This blast furnace opened on the Monongahela River in 1881 and became part of U.S. Steel’s Homestead Steel Works in 1907! They represent Pittsburgh’s dominance of the American steel industry during the 19th and 20th centuries, processing 1,000-1,250 tons of iron a day at their height! Though the furnace closed in 1982, furnaces #6 and #7 are being preserved as the best examples of pre-World War II blast furnaces still standing!

How Can I #HelpTheHelpers?

  • Volunteer with Rivers of Steel!
  • Donate to Rivers of Steel!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!

How Do I Get There?

801 Carrie Furnace Blvd
Pittsburgh, PA 15218
(Take Me There!)

When Should I Visit?

The furnaces are too dangerous to just walk in, so you’ll have to schedule a tour to get past the fence!
