What Is Flight 93 National Memorial?
Flight 93 National Memorial is a monument to the brave crew and passengers who fought their plane’s hijackers on September 11, 2001.
What Makes It Beautiful?
There’s beauty in sadness, and even after twenty years, this is still a somber spot. The main area of the memorial curves around the bowl where Flight 93 fell, leading to a row of names on marble slabs. These slabs are individually cut, rather than mass-produced, to represent the individuality of all the folks onboard who fought for control of the cockpit against hijackers. Their actions ultimately saved the US Capitol, but they could not save themselves in the process.
This is very much a place for reflection, whether gazing at the boulder that marks the crash site or standing at the Tower of Voices, where the wind moves through 40 chimes, each with a unique note that is specially tuned to harmonize with the other 39. It is one way to bring serenity back to a place where such chaos happened.
