Missoula County Courthouse!

Missoula County Courthouse

What Is the Missoula County Courthouse?

This is the neoclassical courthouse and seat of Missoula County government!

What Makes It Historical?

After Missoula County was established in 1860, and after the seat of Missoula was set in 1866, local government had to rent space while they figured out where to set up a permanent courthouse. The first one went up in 1870 when Montana was still a territory, but after becoming a state in 1889, the needs of local government sure had outgrown this small courthouse!

In 1907, the county hired A.J. Gibson to design a new building and William & Oliver Co from Spokane, Washington to build it! Inside this neoclassical courthouse, which opened its doors in 1910, there are 8 murals by Edgar Paxson, who had risen to national fame with his depiction of Custer’s last stand in the Battle of Little Bighorn!
