Russell Cave National Monument preserves a cave system that housed 10,000 years worth of human cultures!
What Makes It Beautiful?
The dig site isn’t much to look at up close, but when you take a step back and get the full picture of the caves, with the bright blue creek running through it, you really get a sense of how serene and lovely it could have been to live here. Of course, it’s easy to say looking in from the future, but the cavern was spacious and dry with just the right access to refreshment and that soothing sound of running water!
Of course, there’s also the hidden beauty that comes with these storied stones. Five different cultures left their mark here, from the stone tools of the Paleo-Indian period (10,000 to 14,500 years ago) to the bone fish hooks of the Archaic period (3,200 to 11,450 years ago) to the pottery and seed pods of the Woodland period (1,000 to 3,200 years ago) to the imported shell jewelry of the Missisippian period (500 to 1,000 years ago)! That’s a major treasure trove of heritage!
