First White House of the Confederacy

What Is the First White House of the Confederacy?

This was the first executive mansion of the Confederate States of America after secession!

What Makes It Historical?

Montgomery, Alabama was the first capital of the Confederacy after those states seceded in February of 1861. When President Jefferson Davis arrived on February 16, 1861, he did not have an official place to stay and wouldn’t for nine days! On February 25, he ended up leasing the mansion of Colonel Edmond Harrison at a rate of $5,000 per year, and he and Mrs. Davis stayed here and hosted social events until May 27 of that year. Then, the capital moved to Richmond, Virginia, and the treasury sold the unexpired lease on the home!
