The Oaks, Home of Booker T. Washington

What Is The Oaks, Home of Booker T. Washington?

The Oaks is a Queen Anne style home where Booker T. Washingon and his family lived during his time at the Tuskegee Institute!

What Makes It Historical?

Designed by Robert Robinson Taylor, the first Black MIT graduate, and built by Tuskegee students and faculty, this was the first home of its kind in Macon County, fully equipped with steam heating and electricity! After living at Tuskegee for nine years, the Washington family moved into their new home in 1900, making it a hub for both school work and social life at the Tuskegee Institute!

In the 15 years between move-in and Mr. Washington’s death on November 14, 1915, The Oaks hosted a wide range of guests from local farmers to President Theodore Roosevelt. Mrs. Margaret Washington, the hostess with the mostess, lived out her days here until 1925, when the Tuskegee Institute bought it. The Oaks has been part of the National Park Service since 1974!
