What Is the Jones Motor Company?
Today, this Moderne style former auto shop is a multi-use complex of restaurant!
What Makes It Historical?
When Route 66 came down Albuquerque’s Central Avenue in 1939, the need for mechanics skyrocketed! To meet the need, Ralph Jones, already president of the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce and Route 66 Association, opened a Ford dealership and service station at this intersection, where it would be one of the first that westbound motorists would encounter when they arrived in Albuquerque!
A unique problem that Route 66’s auto shops faced, compared with today, is that lots of folks really loaded up their cars when they traveled the Mother Road. Some were so overloaded that the mechancs couldn’t access the parts that needed repair! To get around this, the Jones Motor Company added a carport to its garage specifically for families to unload all the stuff from their cars and trucks and give the mechanics room to work!
