What Is Shiloh National Military Park?
Shiloh National Military Park preserves the 1892 battlefield along the Tennessee River and at Corinth, Mississippi!
What Makes It Historical?
In spring of April 1862, the Union Army under General Grant turned their attention to cutting off the railroads supplying the Conederacy. One of those railroads was at Corinth, Mississippi! To get there, General Grant’s troops were supposed to land at Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River, rendezvous with General Buell, and attack together. Only, they hadn’t expected Confederate defenses to be right at their doorstep!
Before reinforcements could arrive, fighting broke out around the Shiloh Meeting House on the morning of April 6th! The Confederate forces pushed the Union troops all the way back to the river, routing them out of their stronghold called the Hornets Nest until night paused the fighting!
During the night, General Buell’s reinforcements arrived, and the tide turned on April 7, especially because Confederate General Johnston had been killed the day before! With 23,000 casualties, the Battle of Shiloh crushed the last Confederate offensive in the Mississippi Valley and led to the capture of the railroads at Corinth!
