Kansas State Capitol!

Kansas State Capitol

What Is the Kansas State Capitol?

It’s the Kansas State Capitol building!

What Makes It Historical?

This French-inspired capitol building was designed by Edward Townsend Mix, then altered and executed by state architect, John Haskell! Actually, about eight different architects contributed to building the capitol from the laying of its cornerstone on October 17, 1866 to its completion in June of 1903! Inside is a mix of marbles from all over the world: Georgia, Tennessee, Italy, France, and northern Africa, plus huge, famous murals like John Steuart Curry’s Tragic Prelude showing John Brown in the “Bleeding Kansas” period! The original design was never fully completed, though, because of controversy over removing parts to add more murals and disagreement over the model they wanted to use to depict Ceres/Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, on top of the dome!

How Can I #HelpTheHelpers?

  • Volunteer with the Kansas Historical Society!
  • Become a member of the Kansas Historical Society!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
