What Is the Joslyn Castle?
This was the Scottish Baronial home of George & Sarah Joslyn!
What Makes It Historical?
George Joslyn made his fortune in publishing and the manufacture of printing equipment and supplies, so with all this money, he enlisted his wife, Sarah, and architects, John McDonald and George Fisher, to come up with Nebraska’s first castle! Inspired by Scottish architecture, they spent $250,000 (about $7 million today) on their 35-room mansion, which only took 11 months to build!
Ready to have their property look lived in, the Joslyns had 100 adult trees trucked in and planted on the lot, set up a greenhouse for Sarah’s nationally recognized orchid collection, and even installed a koi pond! The Joslyns were philanthropists involved in the Omaha Society of Fine Arts and played a key role in the creation of the Omaha Art Museum. Today, their home is still a venue for educational and cultural events!
