More about California Historical Landmark #1059:
Gaspar de Portolá’s expedition group camped here during their return from San Francisco Bay on November 18, 1769! The rocks on this beach were shaped like beans, so Father Crespi, who was documenting the journey, marked the river as “Arroyo de los Frijoles,” or Bean Hollow!
After Mexican independence, the Arroyo de los Frijoles marked the southern boundary of the 4,439-acre Rancho Butano, granted by Governor Juan Alvarado to Ramona Sánchez in 1838! This ranch would later get sold to Manuel Rodríguez then to Loren Colburn, who became notorious for snatching up land and filing lawsuits to keep it! The joke was on him, though, because his lasting legacy was a fancy hotel overlooking Bean Hollow beach, but no one stayed there! The Ocean Shore Railway, which he was counting on, was never finished!
