Lake Jackson Mounds!

Lake Jackson Mounds

What Are the Lake Jackson Mounds?

These seven earthen mounds are the southernmost Mississippian temple mounds in the continental USA!

What Makes It Historical?

It’s hard to know much about life among these mounds, but digs have determined that this place was thriving from around 1200 CE all the way until 1500! The copper breastplates, shells, and more connect them to a huge network of Mississippian sites stretching as far north as Wisconsin and as far west as Oklahoma! Archaeologists collectively call these ancestors of the Apalachee, Creek, Cherokee, and Choctaw, the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex or Southern Cult!
