What Is Buckman Tavern?
This museum was a popular Lexington tavern where the Minute Men gathered on the morning of April 19, 1775, waiting for the British to arrive!
What Makes It Historical?
This place could have been called Muzzy Tavern, since Benjamin Muzzy was the original proprietor in 1690, but it was John Buckman who remodeled it and was at the counter in 1775, not serving drinks but serving as a Minute Man! For four hours after Paul Revere delivered his famous warning, militiamen converged on Buckman Tavern, awaiting the orders of Captain John Parker, and at dawn, they stepped out onto Lexington Green and the first gunfire of the Revolution! In the years following its grisly place in history, Buckman Tavern would go on to be Lexington’s first store, post office (1812), and emergency hospital (1940s)!
