What Is Lexington Green?
Lexington Green is a large, grassy area in the center of Lexington, Massachusetts, and it’s where the Minute Men assembled on the morning of April 19, 1775 to greet the oncoming British soldiers!
What Makes It Historical?
Somewhere between midnight and 1:00 AM on April 19, 1775, Paul Revere rode into Lexington with word that British soldiers were en route to raid the weapons and ammunition stored in Concord! An alarm rang out from the local belfry, signalling 75 Minute Men, led by Captain John Parker, to assemble on the Green in preparation for Major John Pitcairn’s arrival!
Around 5:00 AM, the British arrived and ordered the Minute Men to disperse! When they didn’t, Major Pitcairn ordered his soldiers to disarm the rebels, only a musket misfired, and confused shooting left eight Americans dead and ten wounded! The British kept marching west toward Concord, unaware that these shots had been the first of the American Revolution!
