What Is The Daniels House?
This former shipbuilders’ home is now celebrated as the oldest inn in Salem!
What Makes It Historical?
Built between 1667 and 1693, this First Period home housed two generations of shipbuilders named Stephen Daniels! The home passed to the Silsbee family through Stephen, Jr.’s daughter, Mary, who enlarged it to its current state. It then stayed with the Silsbees until the 1860s, when it shifted through stages as apartments, a daycare, a boarding house, and after a 20-year vacancy caused by the Great Depression, a historic tea house run by Theodore Perry and Winifred Haller. Today, this home is run as an inn, which some folks say is haunted by the ghosts of a woman and cats!
