What Is Adams National Historical Park?
This park preserves the birthplace of two President Adams and the farm that housed four generations of the Adams Family!
What Makes It Historical?
There is way too much history in these two sites to summarize! John Adams, lawyer, diplomat, Son of Liberty, first vice president, and second president, was born here on October 30, 1735! His son, John Quincy Adams, was also born here on July 11, 1767 before the town was renamed Quincy in 1794! Also a diplomat and lawyer, he was Secretary of State before becoming the sixth president, collaborating on the Monroe Doctrine and signing the treaty that gave Florida to the USA!
In any case, this park not only protects their birth homes but also the “Peace Farm,” where the Adams Family settled in 1788 following six years abroad in Britain, France, and the Netherlands! When they moved in, it was a working farm, but over time, it developed into more of a country estate. John Adams’ grandson, Charles Francis, installed a stone library in 1870 to house 12,000 volumes of literature, diaries, and compendia then went on to serve as US Minister in London! The next generation of Adams was the last to live here, though Brooks Adams planned for the future by forming the Adams Memorial Society in 1927. These direct descendants of the original pair managed the property until 1946 when the estate was turned over to the National Park Service!
