What Is Cold Springs School?
This is the oldest, and one of the last, standing log schoolhouses in South Dakota!
What Makes It Historical?
The Cold Springs School was built in 1887 on the land of John Raver at the cost of $200! With Maude Drew as its first teacher, this one-room schoolhouse served as not only the educational center, but also the social and spiritual hub of the small farming community of Cold Springs for 63 years! By the time a blizzard closed it for good in 1949, the Cold Springs school had seen at least one man educated, married, and mourned within its walls. Thanks to a plucky local historical society, it was saved from demolition and can still tell the stories today!
How Can I #HelpTheHelpers?
- Donate to the Cold Springs Historical Society!
- Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
