George Floyd Square!

George Floyd Square

What Is George Floyd Square?

This is the closed-off square surrounding the site where George Perry Floyd was murdered on May 25, 2020!

What Makes It Historical?

George Perry Floyd was well known in his community after moving to Minneapolis in 2014 to turn his life around. So when police arrested him on suspicion of using a counterfeit $20 bill at Cup Foods, the neighborhood took notice, and Darnella Frazier recorded and posted a video of the officers suffocating him for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. His last words, “I can’t breathe,” became a rallying cry for protests against police brutality and racist policies taking place on every continent except Antarctica! With 15-26 million folks taking part in these protests here in the USA, it was the nation’s largest social movement in its history!

Here, at the sight where it happened, folks put two giant fist sculptures in the middle of Chicago Avenue, proclaiming the Free State of George Floyd. Cup Foods became Unity Foods, and the place where Mr. Floyd was murdered became barricaded off to enclose memorial offerings. Plants that are left are kept fresh in a nearby greenhouse! The out-of-use bus shelters became book and clothing donation areas, while an organization called 612 Minneapolis All Shall Heal (MASH) started providing medical care to anyone in need, right in the heart of the square! It’s been controversial though, with folks in the community unsure how best to move forward with healing. Some have pushed for Cup/Unity Foods to shut down, while other businesses have suffered from lack of foot traffic. Until a permanent George Floyd Global Memorial is finalized, for now, this wounded community is doing what it can both to remember and to rebuild!
