What Is Effigy Mounds National Monument?
This park preserves and protects at least 206 known earth mounds left behind by the ancestors of more than 20 modern tribes!
What Makes It Beautiful?
This is a park best seen from the sky, for reasons that are still kind of mysterious! If you’re earthbound on a visit, you might be able to make out the amazing bear- or bird- shaped mounds, especially in summer time. Get lovely views across the Mississippi River from one of the North Unit’s many vistas, or head down to the South Unit to experience the majestic caravan that makes up the Marching Bears mound group. It’s one of the largest clusters of mounds left in America, and most of them are shaped like very cute bears! These are ancient woodlands that are full of symbolism and well worth a stroll!
