Pipestone National Monument!

Pipestone National Monument

What Is Pipestone National Monument?

This petite park preserves and protects the ancient stone quarries from which generations of Native Americans have gotten the stone used to make ceremonial pipes!

What Makes It Beautiful?

Much of this park is funcion over form, with the foreground made up of active stone quarries, but if you walk a little further from the visitor center, where the pipestone is a hundred feet below the surface, you’ll find some amazing quartzite cliffs! These are super unusual for the middle of the Great Plains, colored deep red by hematite, and they form the foundation for a lovely cascade, the Winnewissa Falls! Well appreciated with colorful medicine bundles, these cliffs at Pipestone have kept their intimate, sacred atmosphere after many generations. What might you experience when you visit?!
