What Is the Little Rock?
This little rock is what’s left of the namesake of Little Rock, Arkansas!
What Makes It Historical?
The earliest record of the Little Rock dates back to a French map, circa 1799! The name itself came from Jean-Baptiste Bénard de La Harpe, who spotted le Petit Rocher on April 9, 1722 as he moved up the Arkansas River from the mouth of the Mississippi! This rock became an important landing place for boats, as it disrupted the current, and a town rose up west of this point, bordered by a line separating them from the Quapaw tribe in 1818. This Quapaw Line only lasted about six years before the Quapaw began to be removed from the territory named after them! Little Rock became a main stopping point for other tribes being forcibly removed to Oklahoma! From there, Little Rock became the capital of Arkansas Territory in 1821, then the state capital in 1836!
