What Is Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument?
This is an 87,500-acre swath of pure wilderness, protecting the forests and waterways in the shadow of Mt. Katahdin!
What Makes It Beautiful?
First things first, this park is best experienced with bug repellent! Once you’ve got the deer flies under control, enjoy the greenery! The pines are dense and verdant, and in the summer months, the trails are speckled with wild strawberries! The streams here are crystal clear and home to both trout and endangered salmon, and the ponds are perfect mirrors of the world above! This whole park is set up to give visitors breathtaking glimpses of Mt. Katahdin, sacred to the Penobscot and the official northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail! As a park still under development, this is the perfect place to enjoy solitude in an ever more crowded world!
