What Is the Duwamish Hill Preserve?
This 10.5-acre park is what remains of St̕əqxʷ, the beaver lodge, and other sites associated with the Salishan Epic of the Winds!
What Makes It Historical?
The Epic of the Winds tells of how the North Wind people killed the Chinook Wind people and created a frozen fish trap on the Duwamish River to starve the people upriver. Chinook Wind’s son with Mountain Beaver Woman was called Storm Wind. When he was old enough, he met up with his grandmother, and together, they smashed the fish trap and chased North Wind out of the valley, leaving behind a temperate area along Puget Sound that doesn’t get a ton of snow! Today, there isn’t much left of Grandmother’s Hill, which was extensively quarried, even slated to be flattened for machine storage until the Cascade Land Conservancy (now Forterra) stepped in and set it aside as a cultural preserve! Today, folks can walk around the preserve and see what remans of Grandmother’s Hill and the Fish Trap from the story!
